Lage der Promotion
In German-speaking countries, relatively few PhD programmes with an explicitly practical component in design and the arts have been established to date. The forum aims to address this.
On 11 June 2026, the Department of Design at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences is organising a one-day event for prospective PhD students and current PhD candidates in design and the arts: The State of PhD Studies. Together with my colleague Anna Dill, I was invited to present the design:promoviert colloquium and subsequently shared insights into my doctoral thesis, ‘Urban Mobility in Dakar: Urban Development between Exclusion and Participation’.
Programme
- Keynote lecture: “Knowledge Policies in the Arts” by Dr Marie Hoop
- presentations: Models of practice-based doctoral studies
- Networking initiative design:promoviert
- Panel discussion on “The State of Doctoral Studies”
- Project insights: Presentations by doctoral candidates from the fields of design and art
The symposium was organised by Kirsten Wagner, Edith Kollath, Sarah Fyrguth and Jana Sehnert. Anyone interested is warmly invited to take part, exchange views and discuss the ‘state of doctoral research’.
